Incognito Flamingos

Five Brookside Gardens flamingos are going to the Children’s Garden “incognito” as native species - the Northern cardinal, Baltimore Oriole, American Goldfinch, Eastern bluebird, and Ruby-throated Hummingbird. But they needed help creating the new feathers for their “disguise.” The flamingos are five flat metal sculptures, approximately 7-8 feet tall, that function as plant holders.

Brookside Gardens commissioned local artists to use their imagination and creativity to paint the flamingos for display in the Children’s Garden. WAP issued the "Call to Artists" and Brookside Gardens selected 4 artists to paint the flamingos. Congratulations to Montgomery County Artists:

Isabelle Klimanov

Melissa Ou

Karen Rueger

The artists will receive a fee of $350 per flamingo. This includes the cost of paint and supplies. Artists are required to use U-V resistant paint that will withstand the elements of an outdoor installation for at least five years. The artists have begun work transforming the 7ft flamingo-shaped metal sculptures into native bird species. Look for these designs to come to life in June in the Children's Garden at Brookside. Stay tuned for updates and a date to meet the artists on site.
